Why reverse image search catches scammers

Romance scammers almost never use their own photos. They steal pictures from models, influencers, soldiers, or random strangers. A reverse image search shows everywhere that photo already exists online.

What is DateScamCheck?

DateScamCheck is a free online tool that helps you find out whether a dating profile photo is genuine or stolen. Online dating is a normal way to meet people β€” but it has also become the favourite hunting ground for romance scammers, who build fake identities to win trust and then steal money. The single most common building block of a fake profile is a photo lifted from someone else.

You give us the web address of a profile picture, or upload one from your phone. We run a reverse image search β€” a search that uses the picture itself instead of words β€” and check whether that exact image already exists elsewhere on the internet. We then condense what we find into one plain-English verdict: βœ… Likely Real, ⚠️ Suspicious, or 🚨 Likely Fake, along with the list of websites where the photo turned up so you can judge for yourself.

The service is completely free, requires no account, and stores nothing. It is funded by the ads on this page. It is designed for the worried person searching at 2 a.m. β€” fast, clear, and honest about what the result does and does not mean.

Frequently asked questions

Is DateScamCheck free?

Yes. The tool is completely free to use, with no account or sign-up. It is supported by the advertisements shown on the site.

Do you store the photos I check?

No. We have no database. An image URL is sent to our search provider only to run that one search, and uploaded photos are previewed in your browser and never sent to our servers. Nothing about your search is kept.

Does a "Likely Real" result mean the person is safe?

No. It means the photo isn't widely circulated online, which is normal for a private individual β€” but a brand-new fake photo may simply not be indexed yet. Always combine the result with the other warning signs.

Why does my own photo show "Likely Fake"?

Public figures, influencers, and anyone with an active social media presence naturally appear in many places online. The verdict reflects how widely an image circulates, not a judgement about a specific person.

Can I check a photo I saved to my phone?

Yes. Use the "Upload photo" tab. Because an uploaded file has no public web address, we send you to Google Lens to complete the search β€” it is free and takes a few seconds.

What should I do if a profile looks fake?

Slow down, stop sharing personal information, never send money or cryptocurrency, and read the guidance on our About page. If you believe you have been targeted, report it to your local authorities.
